It’s not uncommon to hear about people who walk, talk, or thrash about in their sleep. What many may not realize is that there are far stranger activities that can take place while sleeping. Everyone has likely heard a story of a driver dozing off at the wheel or a co-worker drifting off at their desk, but what a cook falling asleep at the stove? Unfortunately, I must admit that I’ve been this person and I’m here to share my sleep cooking experience.

The past few years of my life have been consumed with dedicated repetition. During the day, I put in long, hard hours at work to provide for my family. By the time I get home, however, I can’t seem to keep myself awake long enough to boil some pasta for my children’s spaghetti dinner! Several nights ago, my youngest walked into the kitchen to find me dozing in a chair while a pot boiled and bubbled violently on the stove. I sprung to life and immediately turned down the heat, my heart in a flutter. I stared down into the boiling water and noticed that I had yet to even add the pasta before nodding off. As it turns out, I’m not so good at this whole sleep cooking thing.
CHANGES MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE
Since my sleep cooking incident, I’ve had to stop and think about my work-life balance. I know it’s often said that a watched pot never boils, but in my case, perhaps I wasn’t being watchful enough to ensure the safety of my home and loved ones. Everything I do is for my family, but perhaps the best gift I could give them is being more mentally present in my home life. I’ve been taking things a little more slowly and practicing mindfulness about work-related stresses that threaten to drain my energy and leave me crashing in the kitchen. My new philosophy is not to sweat the small stuff, but to always stop to smell the roses, and make it my goal to come home with enough energy left to safely prepare a meal for my family.
